The book is the genious cooperation between spain`s leading and most controversial writer and Nobel Prize Winner for literature (1989) Camilo José Cela and the leading photographer in the Catalan Photographic Group as one of the publishers most controversial books, due entirely to its erotic content, which brought it much condemnation. Characteristically, Cela`s text is brutal and frankly ribald. Colom`s pictures are of prostitutes in the Raval, the Chinese quarter of Barcelona. I discovered the Barrio Chino in 1958, I understood that it was my world. I was fascinated by its diversity and its social richnessI literally got sucked in by the human quality of these characters. Every weekend for more than two years, Joan Colom explored the "bas-fonds" of Barcelona, the Raval neighbourhood that is known today as the "Barrio Chino". Concerned with remaining discreet and breaking with the aesthetic traditions of his elders, he began by photographing without aiming the camera. Only whilst printing would he decide on the precise frame for each image. He saw himself as an impassioned witness of a social theatre and his work as a search for authentic "images that touch me." Today, the "imaginaire" of urban life of the Barrio Chino is rooted in Colom's images. His work was praised early on by personalities such as Ramon Massats and Joseph Maria Casademont who wrote in 1961: "With Joan Colom, we are entering a new phase of our history of photography." In these images the modernist avantgarde of the fifties is interwined with the "dark" and pessimistic tradition of Spain during the Franco era. Joan Colom was born in Barcelona in 1921. Following military service, he became an accountant in a firm where he stayed until his retirement in 1986. But at the age of 36 he also developed a passion for photography, joining the Photographic Association of Catalonia where he very quickly learnt the technical skills that helped him in his atypical career.***************Editorial Lumen, Barcelona, 1964. The 80 plates of Goya's Caprichos are reproduced on the odd-numbered pages, one to a page. Facing each one are the comments of Camilo José Cela (Nobel Prize for Literature, 1989). This copy includes AN ORIGINAL DRAWING BY CELA ON THE TITLE-PAGE, an imitation of Goya's famous self-portrait (plate 1 of the Caprichos) WITH SOME OF THE FEATURES ALTERED TO RESEMBLE CELA.
