An author's presentation copy of Heinrich Harrer's popular account of his time in Tibet between 1944 and 1951, with a signed letter from Harrer himself. The fifth impression of the first UK edition, published the year after the first impression. Translated by Richard Graves.Tipped in to the half title is a signed letter from Harrer, on the letterhead of his UK publisher, Rupert Hart-Davis. The letter is dated October 1953, and is in Harrer's native German. The letter appears to begin with 'I'm sorry Mr. Laupe!', offers the recipient 'thousands of thanks', and informs Laupe that Hart-Davis is his publisher.In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, double page map, and further monochrome photographic plates.Harrer's autobiography covers the escape of Harrer and his companion, Peter Aufschnaiter, from a British internment camp in India, after which they spent several years in Tibet, prior to the Battle of Chamdo and the Chinese attempted to reestablish control over Tibet.It has been said that the book "provided the world with a final glimpse of life in an independent Tibetan state prior to the Chinese invasion.Tipped in to the verso of the front free endpaper is a promotional paragraph advertising the 1956 British documentary adaptation of the work, directed by Hans Niete and written by Heinrich Harrer and Walter Ulbrich.Tipped in to the front free endpaper is the author's biography portion of the dust wrapper rear flyleaf. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, fine. Adhesive tape residue and remnants to front and rear pastedown and free endpaper. Excised author's biography from dust wrapper rear flyleaf pasted to front free endpaper, with clipping tipped in to verso of front free endpaper, and author's letter tipped in to half title. Offsetting to tail of dust wrapper front wrap, with edgewear to back strip head, and small chip to head of rear wrap. Rear flyleaf removed. Offsetting from tape to front flyleaf reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright. Place names throughout have been circled in pencil by a prior owner. Very Good

Some shelfwear along the the bottom, else a Very Good copy in a priced-clipped jacket that has chipping at the top of the spine, and at the corners, and one closed tear near the front bottom corner.
