  • Publisher: Easton Press
Easton Press. Very Fine; Sealed in Publisher's Wrap. Still in publisher's original wrapping. A scarce handsome brown full leather Collector's Edition of Harrer's classic book, signed by the author on the signature page. Originally published in 1953. This book tells of the author's autobiographical experience escaping from a British internment camp in northern India during World War II to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa where he established a strong relationship as a friend and tutor to the young Dalai Lama. Seven years later he was forced to flee Tibet when the Chinese overtook the country. It is his experiences during those seven years that give the story it's name. Mr. Harrer was born in 1912 and passed away in 2006 at the age of 93. In 1997 a major motion picture was made based n this book, starring Brad Pitt as Heinrich Harrer and David Thewlis as his companion, Peter Aufschnaiter. Reportedly David Thewlis is banned from ever entering China because of his role in this movie. In fine brown leather with gold gilt cover designs and page edges, moire silk endpapers and bound-in silk bookmark. Still in the original shrinkwrap and includes the publisher's note card and Certificate of Authenticity from Easton Press. Parrish Books guarantees all signatures as authentic.

  • Date published: 1954
New York: E. P. Dutton and Company, Inc.,, 1954. A remarkable best-selling account of pre-invasion Tibet First US edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on double-page title page recto, "For Rudy Grauer, with best wishes, from, H. Harrer, [inscription in Tibetan,] New York, March 1955". "This is the action-packed story of a young adventurer's escape from a British internment camp in India during World War II and his dramatic trek through rugged Himalayan passes to sanctuary in the Forbidden City of Lhasa" (jacket blurb). Harrer (1912-2006) was an Austrian mountaineer, part of the four-man team who made the first successful ascent of the north face of the Eiger in 1938. Seven Years in Tibet was a runaway best-seller and translated into 53 languages. It gives a glimpse of the old Tibet before the Chinese invasion of 1950. The previous owner of this copy is possibly the former mayor of Richmond, British Columbia, who the author could have met during a tour of North America, from which a number of similarly inscribed copies can be found. Octavo. Double-page title page, 45 illustrations from photographs, and double-page regional map. Original red quarter cloth, gilt-lettered spine, black cloth covers with gilt stamp of Lhasa to front cover. With dust jacket. A near-fine copy, spine ends faded, board corners at foot rubbed, in an unclipped dust jacket, spine faded, extremities rubbed, corners nicked, small closed tear to front panel, a bright and sharp example, very good indeed.
