Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine who was Clemens' literary executor. Twain had been attempting to write an autobiography for 35 years prior to his death. The task of editing his "disorganzed mass of unpublished writing" fell to Albert Paine (much of it was dictated prior to his death in 1909), and publishing it in book form was first attempted by Harper's--it covers about 2/5 of his unpublished works. Frontis portrait in each volume with tissue guard. Pagination: vol. 1: 368pp; vol. 2: 365pp. Two pages of ads in rear of volume 2 with Harper's Mark Twain books. Original publisher's blue cloth binding with bright gilt spine and cover lettering; top edges gilt. Previous owner bookplate in each volume on front paste down else, a nice clean, tight and unmarked set with no interior or exterior markings. This is the August 1924 printing (K-Y) in first year of publication (2 months after the first August printing). Ref: BAL 3537 p. 225; Frontis Portraits; 8vo, 8"-9" tall.
