Stated first edition with date in Roman numerals on title page, in the original luxury blue ribbed cloth with gilt titles and author's signature on the front covers and gilt top edges. The first appearance of Twain's autobiography as he edited it for publication, illustrated by personal photographs. Laid in is a 3-page typed letter on Harper stationery by editor Sara Williams describing what was "sanitized" from this edition, and hence of importance to Twain scholars. A pristine, unmarked set, very well preserved in bright gilt. Octavo.

Two volumes in maroon cloth with gilt spine lettering, top edges gilt, tissue protected frontis plate in each volume, title pages in red and black, publisher's original printed slipcase. Includes some publisher advertising tucked into the front of the first volume. Spines slightly faded with some wear to the spine heads, minor spots to top of one front cover, otherwise very good with good hinges, tight bindings, very clean pages, no names or other markings. The slipcase is shelfworn and has a chipped and ragged open edge, but structurally sound. Hard Cover. Good/Fair Slipcase. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall.
