Hardback. The Arizona Rangers were created in 1901, more than a decade after the census of 1890 had pronounced the frontier closed. But for more than 7yrs, the Rangers galloped across mountains and deserts in pursuit of cattle rustlers, murderers, and horse thieves. Blazing away with Colt revolvers and Winchesters, they shot it out with old-style western desperadoes in saloons, dusty streets, and desolate badlands. From late in 1901 until early in 1909, outlawry in Arizona Territory was countered by a hard-riding, quick-triggered little band of men who carried into a new century the traditions of Pat Garrett, Wild Bill Hickok, Commodore Perry Owens, and other gunfighting members of an earlier generation of frontier lawmen. The author travelled throughout Arizona, camping where the Rangers camped, talking with old-timers, walking the streets where Ranger shootouts occurred. He studied Ranger correspondence and other Ranger archives, and scoured daily Arizona newspapers from the 1901 - 1909 period.
