ABOUT THIS BOOK: The National Book Awardâwinner Patti Smith presents a treasure box of a childhood memoir about âclear unspeakable joyâ and âjust the wish to know.â A great book about becoming an artist, Woolgathering tells of a youngster finding herself as she learns the noble vocation of woolgathering, âa worthy calling that seemed a good job for me.â She discovers often at night, often in nature the pleasures of rescuing âa fleeting thought.â Deeply moving, Wool- gathering calls up our own memories, as the child âglimpses and gleans, piecing together a crazy quilt of truths.â Smith introduces us to her tribe, âa race of cloud dwellers,â and to the fierce, vital pleasures of cloud watching and stargazing and wandering.(Publisher).

M TRAIN
Smith, Patti
Publisher: Knopf
Date published: 2015
ISBN: 9781101875100
New York: Knopf, 2015. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. M Train begins in the tiny Greenwich Village café where Smith goes every morning for black coffee, ruminates on the world as it is and the world as it was, and writes in her notebook. Through prose that shifts fluidly between dreams and reality, past and present, we travel to Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Mexico; to the fertile moon terrain of Iceland; to a ramshackle seaside bungalow in New York's Far Rockaway that Smith acquires just before Hurricane Sandy hits; to the West 4th Street subway station, filled with the sounds of the Velvet Underground after the death of Lou Reed; and to the graves of Genet, Plath, Rimbaud, and Mishima. Woven throughout are reflections on the writer's craft and on artistic creation. Here, too, are singular memories of Smith's life in Michigan and the irremediable loss of her husband, Fred Sonic Smith. ààBraiding despair with hope and consolation, illustrated with her signature Polaroids, M Train is a meditation on travel, detective shows, literature, and coffee. It is a powerful, deeply moving book by one of the most remarkable multiplatform artists at work today. Illustrated with her signature Polaroids.

YEAR OF THE MONKEY
Smith, Patti
Publisher: Knopf
Date published: 2019
ISBN: 9780525657682
New York: Knopf, 2019. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Following a run of New Year's concerts at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore, Patti Smith finds herself tramping the coast of Santa Cruz, about to embark on a year of solitary wandering. Unfettered by logic or time, she draws us into her private wonderland with no design, yet heeding signs-including a talking sign that looms above her, prodding and sparring like the Cheshire Cat. In February, a surreal lunar year begins, bringing with it unexpected turns, heightened mischief, and inescapable sorrow. In a stranger's words, "Anything is possible: after all, it's the Year of the Monkey." For Smith-inveterately curious, always exploring, tracking thoughts, writing-the year evolves as one of reckoning with the changes in life's gyre: with loss, aging, and a dramatic shift in the political landscape of America. Smith melds the western landscape with her own dreamscape. Taking us from California to the Arizona desert; to a Kentucky farm as the amanuensis of a friend in crisis; to the hospital room of a valued mentor; and by turns to remembered and imagined places, this haunting memoir blends fact and fiction with poetic mastery. The unexpected happens; grief and disillusionment set in. But as Smith heads toward a new decade in her own life, she offers this balm to the reader: her wisdom, wit, gimlet eye, and above all, a rugged hope for a better world. Riveting, elegant, often humorous, illustrated by Smith's signature Polaroids, Year of the Monkey is a moving and original work, a touchstone for our turbulent times. Illustrated from photographs.

New Wave. August, 1977
Smith, Patti; Bangs, Lester et al.
Publisher: Sun King...
Date published: 1977
San Francisco: Sun King Productions, 1977. Soft Cover. Good. Side folding tabloid newspaper format. Approximately 15 by 11 ½ inches. 46 pp. Black and white photos throughout. Perhaps the first and only issue of this fanzine, featuring articles on punk and new wave bands. Of note is an article by Lester Bangs on punk roots, taking a somewhat contemplative and philosophical look at punk and its trappings, arguing that perhaps punk was already dead. Another notable piece features Patti Smith discussing Robert Bresson. With articles on the Nuns, Richard, The Avengers, Crime, etc. Published by Edwin Craven (aka Edwin Heaven), the original manager for the San Francisco punk band the Nuns, this apparently short-lived fanzine presents well-written yet quirky interviews and essays on various punk and new wave acts. GOOD condition. Moderate browning to the paper. Moderate minor tears along the extremities, with some chipping and associated creasing. Center fold crease present. Minor soiling.
