London: Aloes Books, 1976. Softcover. Fine. First edition. Octavo. String-tied red printed wrappers. Fine. Twenty-two poems written alternately by Smith and Verlaine. This is copy number 13 of 22 hand-numbered copies with a Rimbaud piece Signed by Patti Smith bound in. The colophon indicates that there were 25 copies signed by both poets, but Verlaine signed none, and the handwritten limitation seems to indicate that there were 22 copies rather than either the 25 stated, or the 20 we've heard speculated. Rare.

  • Publisher: Middle Earth Books
  • Date published: 1972
Philadelphia: Middle Earth Books, 1972. First Edition. A well-preserved copy of one of Smith's earliest works – one of three chapbooks published the same year that Seventh Heaven, her first full-length book, was published by Telegraph Books. This collection of poems was published by the Philadelphia-based bookshop Middle Earth Books, founded in 1969 and owned by Samuel and Sims Amico. Their shop, located at 1134 Pine Street, was a hub for the underground literary and arts scene, hosting readings as well as embarking on a publishing venture. In a 1995 interview, when A.D. Amorosi asked Smith about the significance of Middle Earth Books, she replied: "If it wasn't my first reading, it was the first out-of-town thing because I was living in New York at the time, which made it very exciting. Like a first job...I was 22 and Robert Mapplethorpe and I were living together...in the Chelsea Hotel and he took the Polaroid for the cover. Didn't make any money (laughs) but just the thrill of seeing one's work, that someone thought it worthy of printing..." (Sly, Margery. Blog post: "Patti Smith at Middle Earth Books." March 31, 2022). The most elusive and desirable of Smith's early books, uncommon in commerce. OCLC notes 10 holdings. One of 100 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.48. Slim octavo (21.5cm); offset printed sheets, hand-sewn into pictorial card wrappers; [20]pp. Light wear to wrapper extremities, mild touch of separation between rear pastedown and inner rear wrapper; contents fresh; Near Fine.

  • Publisher: S.i.
  • Date published: 1972
[New York: S.i., 1972. Smith's working typescript for this early poetry chapbook – one of two published the same year Smith's book Seventh Heaven was published by Telegraph Books – containing a poem Smith first wrote in 1970. Published and distributed by The Gotham Book Mart, where during her early years in New York Smith often supplemented her income by scouting rare books on the side. A single poem, narrated by someone on a scaffold waiting to die, while watching the execution of a queen and her 30 ladies in waiting, who are all forced to dig their own graves. A wonderful survival; Smith material of this vintage, and significance, is exceedingly uncommon. Bifolium (21.75cm); original typescript on both sides of a single sheet of white bond (measuring 8.5" x 11"), folded once vertically to create a [4]pp pamphlet, closely mirroring the final layout of the text. With extensive holograph corrections and a few small drawings in two hands – Smith's (in red felt-tipped marker and blue ballpoint pen) and another, undetermined hand (in pencil, which we suspect is Andreas Brown's). Horizontal fold smoothed-out at center, a few tiny crease and tears to extremities, with some scattered soil and staining, and some bleed-through from the red marker; complete and Very Good. Offered together with a copy of the First Edition (New York: The Gotham Book Mart, 1972). One of 300 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.9. Slim octavo (21.5cm); pictorial wrappers, stapled; [8]pp. Faint scuff to rear wrapper, else Fine. Housed together in a custom half-morocco clamshell case.
