Slight toning, else content appears as unblemished with near fine, decorated, oatmeal colored, Cloth covered boards displaying minimal surface/edge wear, in DJ displaying major surface/edge wear as shown, with reinforced and repaired chipping and tears, as shown. Many of my books are from the 19th Century. Books were not written in at that time, instead an index card with info. Am enclosing the one found in this book for you. Enjoy. The greatest and most brilliant star of his century... His numerous works, written in Latin, sleep undisturbed upon the shelves of libraries; hardly a single one of them, though in their day they enjoyed worldwide fame, has any message to our epoch." - from page 3. Kirkus Review: The success of Marie Antoinette the brilliant genius of the biographer himself, entitle this book to a place on the Must list. But the subject matter of necessity limits his scope, for source material is inadequate, and Erasmus is still somewhat shrouded in mystery. This is a ruthless, clinical study of a man who, almost forgotten today, was in his time courted by kings, princes and popes. Idealist, humanist, supernationalist, scholar, individualist to the point of weakness, a coward in his avoidance of the position of leadership in a world demanding a leader, but giving the necessary push to the Reformation, with rapier-like thrust. The book is a character analysis rather than a biography. The early part seems at times padded. But with the stirring narrative of the fight between Luther and Erasmus the story gathers speed, ending with Erasmus' death in Basle. A merciless and brilliant book; Zweig gives his subject full mood of praise and unsparing criticism. Shipping/Handling/Insurance/Tracking Included within the continental U.S. (Free Shipping). This is a biography of Erasmus (1469-1536), one of the most famous Humanist of his time-a great scholar of the northern Renaissance, a pacifist, a contrarian, and the compiler of the first edition of the Greek New Testament to be printed and distributed. New York. 1942. February 1942. Viking Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. Translated from the German by Andrew St. James. 140 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by I. Steinberg. keywords: Literature Translated Germany History Biography. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Did Amerigo Vespucci discover America? He did not. Did he first set foot upon the mainland? He did not. Did he ever claim either of these achievements, or suggest that his name be bestowed upon this mundus novus? A proposal so audacious would never have occurred to him. By what grotesque coincidence, then, did ‘America' become the name of that new world which should have been called ‘Columbia'? In this erudite and witty book, Zweig untangles the snarl of accident and forgery that produced so astonishing a denouement. Once on the trail of this grandiose case of mistaken identity, Zweig fills in with rapid, revealing strokes the background against which it took place. He pictures the drugged world of the Middle Ages slowly regaining consciousness, reaching out to embrace all knowledge, to dare all unknown dangers, to grasp to itself the riches of an earth whose scope it had just begun to comprehend. He evaluates Vespucci's actual contribution to that greatest age of discovery, shows how an unsought notoriety was thrust upon him, and how he, the most honest and modest of men, was vilified for generations as a liar and braggart. Zweig's powers of characterization, his unerring faculty for getting at the import ant truth in the morass of ancient fact, have made him one of the most popular historians and biographers of our day. He has never had a subject better suited to his talents. inventory #7400

In the original pictorial dustwrapper, unclipped (priced $1.50 on front flap), lightly soiled but generally bright and unfaded, Very Good+. Zweig's controversial novella, originally published in the Viennese newspaper Neue Freie Presse in 1922. The story, filled with Freudian references, deals with the romantic obsession of an abortionist with one of his patients, leading finally to her death and his suicide – almost needless to say, this was hardly the drink of choice for Americans in the Great Depression; the print run must have been small and sales smaller still, as today the book is unexpectedly scarce in commerce, and rarely found in nice condition.
