She and her family moved to San Francisco when she was 9 and Lotta continued to attract much attention on the stage for a number of years. Several years later she came east and was a sensation in the Broadway music halls. As can be imagined, the beautiful performer was ardently persued but never married; her mother, and later she herself, invested in California real estate. She retired to New Jersey, a wealthy woman, at age 45., Lotta, who became the most popular soubrette of the seventies and eighties, began her career in the gold camps of the High Sierras, and the gambling saloons and variety halls of San Francisco. Troupes appeared not only in the theatres of the cities, but took to the road by stage coach or even on foot and played in the remotest mining towns with showers of gold as their reward. This is the story of the fascinating Lotta who emerged out of this background to become throughout the country the foremost comedy actress and the pioneer in extravaganza and burlesque. Includes much about other entertainers of the time, including Ada Menken, Lola Montez, the Booths, Julia Dean, and more. Wheat's California Gold Rush. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. William Blackwood & Sons London Edinburgh, 1862. HB NODJ, 1st. edition. 1862, VG/VG-, AS-IS, NOJACKET, Green cloth with black Leather at tips & along entire spine, Lined in Gold Gilt on front, Raised Bands on spine with gilt titles, NOJACKET, Interiro nice tight clean light fox, wear , few pgs penciling, Outer pgs edges Marblelized, light scuff edges cvr,One-quarter Leather Bound, 384 pgs .The Author had the honour of contributing to Blackwood's Magazine some sketches of the ways of book-collectors, scholars, literary investigators, desultory readers, and other persons whose pursuits revolve round books and literature. Some friendly criticisms having induced him to reflect on what he had written, he saw, as will generally happen in such cases, that were he to go over the ground again, he would find much that lie would desire to alter, and many things that might be added. He therefore resolved to recast the whole and expand it to the compass of a thin volume. The thin volume, however, fattened as it approached maturity, until it reached the respectable dimensions in which it now awaits the appreciation of any reader who may think it worthy of his attention.. First Edition. Hard Cover.

Crudely rebound in quarter calf, marbled paper over old boards. Armorial bookplate of Aske's Boy School, Haberdasher's Livery Company. Ownership signature on title of Jas. Law Jones, "rec'd from Messrs. Rickers staff & Jones -- 15 Sept. 1803". Scarce. First edition, vol. II only. With added paper (laid in): A Manual of Analytical Mineralogy. Review. Quarterly Review, 1809. 9 pp. pp. 153-161. "This clearly written and well organized book is called the first textbook of general chemistry written in the English language to be based on Lavoisier's new chemistry. The principles are illustrated with experiments." -- Cole. / Accum (1769-1838), born in Germany where the family operated a small soap boiling business. In 1793 Accum came to London to take a position at Brande, apothecaries to George II. He became friends with Anthony Carlisle and William Nicholson and established his own laboratory. He assisted Sir Humphry Davy until 1803 (the year this book was issued). He also began lecturing in 1802 where is students included Benjamin Silliman and William Peck. He supplied apparatus to institutions abroad. Amazingly, in December 1820, he was arrested for mutilating books at the Royal Institution Library, which triggered his exiting England for Germany. "The value of Accum's work lies in the way he saw and exploited the technological possibilities of the rapidly advancing science of chemistry." [DSB].
