  • Publisher: Vanity Fair magazine
  • Date published: 1906
London: Vanity Fair magazine, 1906. 1st Edition. No binding. Near Fine. Vanity Fair Supplement Nov. 28, 1906. Drawn by Spy. Original chromolithograph. 14 x 11 inch Green mat with print 10-3/4 x 6-1/2 inches showing title black double line border. Printed by Bemrose Dalzel Ltd. One of a fine group of thirty four portraits of Jockeys produced by Vanity Fair. This portrait shows the jockey William Griggs. William ('Willie') Griggs was the brother of jockey/trainer Walter Griggs. Willie Grigg’s best year was in 1907 when he rode 67 winners. Major victories during his career included the Chester Cup, Stewards Cup, the Lincoln and Goodwood Cup. His one Classic success came on Cinna in the 1920 1,000 Guineas. He retired from the saddle two years later. Near fine condition. Vanity Fair was a British weekly magazine published from 1868 to 1914. Subtitled "A Weekly Show of Political, Social and Literary Wares", it was founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, who aimed to expose the contemporary vanities of Victorian society. A full-page, color lithograph of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. These prints are often referred to as "Spy Cartoons" after Leslie Ward, perhaps Vanity Fair's most prolific and celebrated cartoonist, who usually signed his works "Spy". featured items 1NB

2003 black hardcover w white DJ signed by author on title page. Book is in very good+ condition; some wear to covers, good binding, no marks inside. This is the fascinating life of Captain Ray Hurst in his own words, a personal window on maritime history. Cap'n Ray tells of his nautical youth in the busy port of Norfolk, his love for boats, and his adventures as a Merchant Marine. Along the way he saw the world and fought through two wars. Seriously injured in adolescence, Ray's WWII duty included repeated convoys across the U-boat infested, lethal North Atlantic. Then after decades as a commercial mariner Ray served in Vietnam twice. He later cleared the Suez Canal after the 1973 War and was instrumental in building Hampton Roads' majestic Monitor-Merrimac Bridge- Tunnel. US media mail only for shipping.

softcover, 6" x 9" 278 pages SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page. Vernon God Little's depiction of innocence and simple humanity in an evil world is never less than astonishing. Peopled by a cast of grotesques, freaks, cold-blooded chattering housewives (who are all, mysteriously, recently wodowed), and one very special adolescent with an unfortunate talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, this book is a riotous adventure story which cuts a satirical swathe through the heart of contemporary America. "Read Vernon God Little for the coruscating wit and raw vitality of its voice, which recalls maybe Flannery O'Connor on an overdose of amphetamines and cable television," - Jonathon Letham.
