Original chromolithograph. 14 x 11 inch Green mat with print 10-3/4 x 6-1/2 inches showing title black double line border. Printed by Bemrose Dalzel Ltd. One of a fine group of thirty four portraits of Jockeys produced by Vanity Fair. This portrait shows the jockey William Griggs. William ('Willie') Griggs was the brother of jockey/trainer Walter Griggs. Willie Grigg’s best year was in 1907 when he rode 67 winners. Major victories during his career included the Chester Cup, Stewards Cup, the Lincoln and Goodwood Cup. His one Classic success came on Cinna in the 1920 1,000 Guineas. He retired from the saddle two years later. Near fine condition. Vanity Fair was a British weekly magazine published from 1868 to 1914. Subtitled "A Weekly Show of Political, Social and Literary Wares", it was founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, who aimed to expose the contemporary vanities of Victorian society. A full-page, color lithograph of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. These prints are often referred to as "Spy Cartoons" after Leslie Ward, perhaps Vanity Fair's most prolific and celebrated cartoonist, who usually signed his works "Spy". featured items 1NB

First edition, hardback. 19.5 × 12.5cm, 518pp. This copy has a prize label to the ffep from The Edinburgh Sir Walter Scott Club which has been signed by Eric Linklater (as President), Allan C Frazer (as Secretary) and another member of the Council whose name I can't decipher. A collection of verse in Scots (as popposed to an anthology of Scottish poems) starting with anonymous verse of the 1300s through to poets born in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Also includes a glossary of early Scots and modern Scots. Condition: A good solid copy, though the spine has a water-stain and is faded, and a few spots of fraying to the rear joint. The contents are very good.

Metrical versions, biblical forms and original poems. Back of half title page has an inscription in the author's maticulous hand "May you find in this book a frequent retreat from the materialism of out times." Plain blue cloth binding with gilt titles on front cover and spine. Front flyleaf is marked along top edge where something has been removed. This book may require additional postage. A wonderful collection of Irish American poetry by the founder and owner of 'Facsimile Books', Kevin T. McEneaney a great New York City Irish bookstore that like my store, "Three Geese In Flight Celtic Books", and "Rivendell" and "Keshkerigan" were part of the "Golden Age" of Celtic Bookstores in New York specialized in Irish and Celtic Books. Few bookstores survive against the beast. I am perhaps the last survivor of the Alamo. Here at least Kevin's fine Irish American poetry has survived in this limited edition to 300 copies. This has a attractive Celtic calligraphy on the card cover. Full page Celtic design page as well.Except for cover soiling and fading in good shape and internally clean and bright.
