The hardcover stated Random First Edition from 1979. Other than a name on the flyleaf, both the cover and the book are in positively excellent condition. This novel concerns the relationships among three people sharing a boarding house in Brooklyn: Stingo, a young aspiring writer from the South, Jewish scientist Nathan Landau, and his lover Sophie, a Polish-Catholic survivor of the German Nazi concentration camps, whom Stingo befriends. Basis for the big screen film directed by Alan J. Pakula, that stars Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. Meryl Streep won an Oscar for Best Actor for her role in this powerful rendering of Styron's novel.

Spine lightly sunned, near fine in a good only glassine dust jacket with the front panel detached (but present) and a toned spine. Laid in from the publisher is a handwritten menu on printed cardstock from the River Cafe in Brooklyn celebrating William Styron's birthday and Sophie's Choice on June 11, 1979. The celebration was attended by many figures on the New York literary scene including Kurt Vonnegut, Elizabeth Hardwick, Francine du Plessix Gray, John Marquand, and many others. The first trade edition had a large printing, thus this special edition is particularly desirable. Tall 8vo., 515pp. Sharp "Special" First Trade Edition that "...has been prepared for presentation to the friends of the author and publisher", as noted on a specially bound-in sheet before the flyleaf. Laid in is a note typed note on Random House letterhead, signed by Michael T. Pratt, Division B.P., Marketing and Sales, describing the volume. The note is dated April, 27, 1979, well before the announced publication date of June 11. Evidently, the final Trade Edition Dust-jacket was not ready so a plain glassine wrapper was provided with the book. Bound in blue cloth with titles in gilt and blue on spine and facsimile signature of the author in gilt on the front board. Square, tight and clean throughout with no toning or spotting. Some softness to spine ends. Spine and edges mildly toned. Glassine wrapper has a couple of tiny hole and some creasing. Spine toning. Signed by the author on a laid in bookplate. Made into the 1982 award winning film starring Meryl Streep. A sharp collectable copy of this uncommon production.
