Story begins in 1748 when Canada was still French. The scene is laid in the historic city of Quebec, and it pictures with all the glowing romance of the 18th century the life, the haunts, the secrets of that high-built wonder city in a thrilling story of the days of New France. First published in 1877, The Golden Dog led the way in Canadian historical romance and opened the eyes of later Canadian novelists to the wealth of material that lay in the unknown and almost forgotten Canadian past.

The first is of the lady Angélique de Méloizes, Madame de Péan, while the second is of Coronel Pierre Philibert, the son of a prosperous merchant."
