About this Item
First Edition. 4.75 x 7.5in. 82pp. Publisher's original printed wraps. Self published by the variously infamous Dr. Tumblety, this pamphlet is a screed against his brief imprisonment for taking part in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, which turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. Years later, Chief Inspector John George Littlechild of Scotland Yard believed Tumblety to be Jack the Ripper. In a letter to journalist George R. Sims he writes that "amongst the suspects, and to my mind a very likely one, was a Dr. T. He was an American quack named Tumblety and was at one time a frequent visitor to London and on those occasions constantly brought under the notice of police, there being a large dossier concerning him at Scotland Yard. he was not known as a sadist, but his feelings toward women were remarkable and bitter in the extreme, a fact on record. Tumblety was arrested at the time of the murders in connection with unnatural offences and charged at Marlborough Street, remanded on bail, jumped his bail, and got away to Boulogne. He shortly left and was never heard from again. It was believed he committed suicide but certain it is that from this time the "Ripper" murders came to an end." VERY GOOD. Shows a section of discoloration of the front cover, three small chips from the covers, marginal wear along the edges and corners, otherwise given its fragility is in excellent condition with the binding secure, the text clean and completely unmarked, and the wraps bright and distinct. As pictured. Seller Inventory # 29137
