About this Item
6 1/2" x 9 3/8", 452 pp., 1864 First Edition, presumed Presentation Copy [see below], hunter green half-leather with marbled boards, gilt titling and 8 gilt bands on spine, frontispiece portrait of Winthrop and three other tissue-guarded interior plates. Small bookplate on front pastedown of A. S. Roe (Alfred Seelye Roe), noted historian and author. In Very Good Plus condition with rubbing wear at the edges, more so at the top corners and spine head (see photo); would refurbish nicely with a bit of leather dye/polish. Presumed to be be a presentation copy as it is a circa 1865-style half-leather and marbled boards binding (why rebind a newly-published volume?) and it was found with a Winthrop family copy of Vol. 2, signed by Robert Winthrop inscribed to a Mrs. G_ L_Winthrop, dated 1866 [I have split the two into separate listings because of the A.S. Roe bookplate: if Roe bought both, or inherited both, from the Winthrops, why the bookplate on v.1 only?]. Interior is Near Fine with only a few faint spots of foxing (FFEP has a bit on an edge, frontis tissue-guard has very faint spot), and age-toning to edges of pages. Binding is quite sound and square. A handsome and important copy of the First Edition. Seller Inventory # 02024v
