Jacket toned to spine and edges, with some wear and a couple of chips and closed tears. Very good. The eighth in the twelve-volume 'A Dance to the Music of Time' series. Anthony Powell won the 1958 James Tait Black Memorial Prize, founded in memory of a partner in the publishing house of A. and C. Black Ltd., and one of the oldest and most prestigious book awards in Britain.

Books 1, 4, 8, & 11 being first American editions and books 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, & 12 being first British editions. 8vo, Each title is in the publisher's original cloth bindings, nine of the titles are in the publisher's original colourfully decorated dustjackets, books 2, 3, and 7 without jackets. A very nice set, the text of each American edition is fresh, bright, and clean, the British issues with just a bit of the spotting common to them, primarily on the earlier novels and mostly confined to the page edges, the cloth ranging from near very good to fine, and the same can be said for the jackets. FIRST EDITION AND AN ATTRACTIVE AND COMPLETE SET OF THE AUTHOR'S BEST AND MOST FAMOUS WORK. His series of novels that comprise A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME, an undertaking that spanned three decades, have been acclaimed by such critics as A. N. Wilson and fellow writers including Evelyn Waugh and Kingsley Amis as among the finest English fiction of the twentieth century. The roman-fleuve of manners, power and passivity in English political, cultural and military life in the mid-20th century has characters (many modeled loosely on real people) who surface, vanish, and then later reappear throughout the sequence. The title of the sequence was borrowed from a painting by Poussin of the same name; full of figures who's identities are uncertain. In the first two pages of 'A Question of Upbringing' the narrator, Nicolas Jenkins, reflects on the painting which resides in the Wallace Collection. In 2008, 'The Times' named Powell one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945, mostly on the strength of this series of novels.

Book two, A Buyer's Market, is SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR to the title page - signed copies of any of the Dance novels are scarce. Five volumes are Fine, four are very nearly Fine, two are Near Fine, and one is Very Good: a bright, crisp and clean set, firmly bound in sharp red cloth; mild toning and/or a little minor spotting to the edge of the page block of five volumes; a previous owner's small bookplate/cataloguing label to the rear pastedown of one volume (Hearing Secret Harmonies) and a previous owner's signature to the ffep of Casanova's Chinese Restaurant and At Lady Molly's; the boards of A Buyer's Market are somewhat mottled and faded, but the page block is entirely unaffected. Each is complete with its original dustwrapper: all of which are at least Very Good, with the majority Near Fine or better; eight are unclipped, one has been clipped-and-repriced by the publisher, and three are clipped. A lovely, Fine set of A Dance to the Music of Time, one of the highspots of post-war English fiction, published over a 25-year period from 1951-75; comprising NINE FIRST PRINTINGS and three later impressions from the 1970s (Vols. 1-3: A Question of Upbringing, 9th, 1977; A Buyer's Market, 6th, 1974; and The Acceptance World, 5th 1972). Volume 8, The Soldier's Art, has been SIGNED by Anthony Powell on a plate to the ffep (and dated to the year of publication, 1966). All twelve volumes are crisp and clean: ten books are Fine and two (The Acceptance World & Hearing Secret Harmonies) are very nearly Fine, marred only by the lightest scattering of tiny spots to the edge of the page block. All are free from previous owner names and inscriptions; one volume, The Acceptance World, has the elegant bookplate of a Wiltshire country house to the front pastedown. Each is complete with its original Broome-Lynne designed dustwrapper: eight are Fine, two are very nearly Fine, and two are Near Fine - all are bright and vibrant, presenting beautifully as a harmonious and consistent set, and scarce thus. All twelve first editions, in original dust jackets. Duodecimos in red cloth with gilt spine titles over black panels. Uniformly very gently worn, with most spines lightly cocked and light foxing to edges. Jackets crisp, toned, and generally very lightly edgeworn, with some small chips (especially at tips) and occasional instances of foxing or damp. The first book is in rather less good shape than the rest, with rubbing to the black panel on spine and with the jacket split completely along its length at the rear fold. An attractive and solid set in color-rich unclipped jackets. Powell's sprawling roman-flueve follows everyman Nicholas Jenkins from his youth in the 1920s until the heady 1970s, examining mid-century English existence through the lens of intersecting lives. It is one of the only works in English with a word-count to approach Marcel Proust's 'À la Recherche du Temps Perdu,' and is still considered to be one of the most significant works of British literature produced in the last century.
