A very smart edition of Roman poet Ovid's 'Heroides', a collection of fifteen epistolary poems, arranged in the format of aggrieved heroines of Roman and Greek mythology addressing their heroic lovers. Translated into English by 'several hands', including Pope, Dryden, Tate, Behn and Otway. Illustrated with twelve engraved plates. Collated, complete. ESTC Citation No. T99266 With seven pages of advertisements to the rear. Lacking the final advertisement leaf. With the bookplate of antiquarians William and Marianne Salloch to the front pastedown. William and Marianne Salloch were founding members of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America (ABAA), with William serving as ABAA President from 1970 to 1972. Salloch"s private collection of books about books was exhibited at the Grolier Club in 1976, and again at the J. Regenstein Library, University of Chicago, in 1984. Rebound in quarter calf, with marbled paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned, with tide mark to tail of leaf A3, I9 and K1, and to tail of final three advertisement leaves. Light worming to head of first eighteen leaves, not affecting text. Very Good Indeed.
