Interesting mainly for its association, this set of three volumes in the larger set belonged to Romulus Mitchell Saunders, American politician and great, great grandfather of Madeleine L'Engle. Saunders has signed with his first initials and last name on several of the first leaves of volume III. L'Engle has also signed her name under Saunders, "and his descendant, Madeleine L'Engle C. Franklin." Saunders served several positions for the state of North Carolina including Superior Court Judge, Attorney General, U. S. House of Representatives, and state senator. He was also the U. S. minister to Spain under James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor. Fair condition, calf, with back strips worn away or missing and boards mostly or fully detached. Rear board missing from volume IV. Page blocks foxed.
