Together 12 volumes. All First Edition, a mixed set. Books 1, 4, 8, & 11 being first American editions and books 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, & 12 being first British editions. 8vo, Each title is in the publisher's original cloth bindings, nine of the titles are in the publisher's original colourfully decorated dustjackets, books 2, 3, and 7 without jackets. A very nice set, the text of each American edition is fresh, bright, and clean, the British issues with just a bit of the spotting common to them, primarily on the earlier novels and mostly confined to the page edges, the cloth ranging from near very good to fine, and the same can be said for the jackets. FIRST EDITION AND AN ATTRACTIVE AND COMPLETE SET OF THE AUTHOR'S BEST AND MOST FAMOUS WORK. His series of novels that comprise A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME, an undertaking that spanned three decades, have been acclaimed by such critics as A. N. Wilson and fellow writers including Evelyn Waugh and Kingsley Amis as among the finest English fiction of the twentieth century. The roman-fleuve of manners, power and passivity in English political, cultural and military life in the mid-20th century has characters (many modeled loosely on real people) who surface, vanish, and then later reappear throughout the sequence. The title of the sequence was borrowed from a painting by Poussin of the same name; full of figures who's identities are uncertain. In the first two pages of 'A Question of Upbringing' the narrator, Nicolas Jenkins, reflects on the painting which resides in the Wallace Collection. In 2008, 'The Times' named Powell one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945, mostly on the strength of this series of novels.

All twelve first editions, in original dust jackets. Duodecimos in red cloth with gilt spine titles over black panels. Uniformly very gently worn, with most spines lightly cocked and light foxing to edges. Jackets crisp, toned, and generally very lightly edgeworn, with some small chips (especially at tips) and occasional instances of foxing or damp. The first book is in rather less good shape than the rest, with rubbing to the black panel on spine and with the jacket split completely along its length at the rear fold. An attractive and solid set in color-rich unclipped jackets. Powell's sprawling roman-flueve follows everyman Nicholas Jenkins from his youth in the 1920s until the heady 1970s, examining mid-century English existence through the lens of intersecting lives. It is one of the only works in English with a word-count to approach Marcel Proust's 'Ã la Recherche du Temps Perdu,' and is still considered to be one of the most significant works of British literature produced in the last century. Overall condition of DJs is Good+

First editions, first impressions, of the complete set of the author's celebrated novel sequence, likened by Evelyn Waugh to "a continuous frieze in high relief, deep cut and detailed" (Waugh, p. 548). Covering more than 50 years in the life of Nicholas Jenkins, the novel "is less about Jenkins than about the world he belongs to, in which the more raffish elements of the establishment commingle with the upper echelons of bohemia, the usual catalysts being their wives, mistresses, and lovers. Observing how these incoherent bodies interact, and the bizarre unions that result, Jenkins discerns a pattern dictated by the rhythm of life - hence the theme of the novel, which is that its characters, like the Seasons in Poussin's painting, are engaged in a ritual dance to the music of time" (ODNB). Evelyn Waugh, The Essays, Articles and Reviews, 1983. Twelve vols, octavo. Attractively bound in recent dark blue morocco, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set.

First editions, first printings. Published by William Heinemann in London between 1951 and 1975. This is a set of very good (or better) copies in twelve volumes. 'A Buyer's Market' in the first issue dust wrapper with wider flaps. Each of the volumes are in similar condition, so will be described as one unless there are other points to note. The dust wrappers are frontally clean and not toned but suffer from some slight separation to the top of the spines, with some light rubbing at the bottom edges. The rear panels are generally marked by handling, but certain ones, particularly the seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh volumes are clean. The first title, 'A Question of Upbringing' has a small portion of restorative repair to the foot of the dust wrapper. 'A Buyers Market' has been price clipped, but the others have not. The internals are clean throughout, with only 'Temporary Kings' and 'Hearing Secret Harmonies' having some traces of previous owners ink, both inscriptions are not pervasive. The boards are generally free from notable chips and marks and the text blocks are often bright and white, with some instances of sparse foxing. Overall, these are very good, or better, copies of the classic 'A Dance to the Music of Time' set. Published between 1951 and 1975 to critical acclaim. The story is an often comic examination of movements and manners, power and passivity in English political, cultural and military life in the mid-twentieth century.

First editions, first impressions, an exceptional association set of the complete novel sequence. Each volume is inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to his friend, the auctioneer and historian Anthony Hobson (1921-2014); the latter nine are inscribed to Hobson and his wife Tanya. Complete sets inscribed to the same recipient are rare. The inscriptions in the books chart the development of a rich friendship fostered over luncheons. A Question of Upbringing is inscribed with the cool and unfamiliar, "This volume belongs to Anthony Hobson, signed by the author, Anthony Powell", but The Acceptance World is inscribed "after a delicious luncheon", which evidently did much to thaw Powell, as The Kindly Ones is warmly inscribed to "Anthony & Tanya, with love from Tony, March 1963", and The Valley of Bones, (which charts Powell's experience in the Second World War), is fittingly inscribed "these military memoirs for a fellow infantryman". As their friendship progressed, Hobson and Powell dined at one another's homes. Hobson presumably made the first move: The Soldier's Art and Books do Furnish a Room are inscribed at his residence, Glebe House. Powell returned the favour, as the final two titles are inscribed at his home, The Chantry. The collection of ephemera with this set illustrates Hobson's fastidious bibliographical nature, saving clippings and notes charting the history of his acquisitions. Loosely inserted are an autograph letter signed from Powell to Hobson, remarking that he originally intended A Dance to the Music of Time to be only six volumes: "I did not know quite how long it would be at the beginning, but very long", and three typed letters signed and one autograph letter signed from Powell to reviewer John Davenport, thanking him for reviews of A Question of Upbringing, At Lady Molly's, The Kindly Ones, and The Valley of Bones. A Dance to the Music of Time, likened by Evelyn Waugh to "a continuous frieze in high relief, deep cut and detailed" (Waugh, p. 548), covers more than 50 years in the life of Nicholas Jenkins. Evelyn Waugh, The Essays, Articles and Reviews, 1983. Twelve works, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt on black ground, publisher's blind device on rear covers. With dust jackets. Together with three typed letters signed from Powell to John Davenport (Punch, 30 October 1957; 1 Chester Gate, 24 January 1951; The Chantry, 13 March 1964); one autograph letter signed from Powell to Davenport (Traveller's Club Pall Mall, 10 June 1962); one autograph postcard signed from Powell to Hobson (2 October 1971); one photograph; one manuscript note in Hobson's hand noting that A Question of Upbringing is in the first state; 16 newspaper clippings, and 35 booksellers' and auctioneer's descriptions. Hobson's bookplate on front pastedowns of each volume; bookseller's ticket of The Thackeray Bookshop on front pastedown of The Acceptance World.
