Mazurka For Two Dead Men
by Cela, Camilo Jose
New York. 1992. New Directions. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket With Some Small Tears Marks and Holes. 081121222x. Nobel Prize Winning Author. Translated from the Spanish by Patricia Haugaard. 272 pages. hardcover. Jacket photograph by Virginia Schendler. Design by Semadar Megged. keywords: Literature Translated Spain . FROM THE PUBLISHER - Mazurka for Two Dead Men represents a culmination of the 1989 Nobel Prize winner Camilo Jose Cela's literary art. The novel was originally published in Spain in 1983 and is now presented in a fine translation by Patricia Haugaard. In 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, 'Lionheart' Gamuzo is abducted and killed, an event recalled repeatedly by the widowed Adega, one of the several narrative voices. In 1939, when the war ends, Tanis Gamuzo avenges his brother. For both events, and for them only, the blind accordion player Gaudencio plays the same mazurka. Set in a backward rural community in Galicia (the author's home territory), Cela's creation is in many ways like a contrapuntal musical composition built with varying themes and moods. In alternately melancholy, humorous, lyrical, or coarse tones he portrays a reign of fools. inventory #17758 ISBN: 081121222x.

BOXWOOD
by Cela Conde, Camilo Jose
U.S.A.: New Directions, 2002. First U.S. Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Translated from the Spanish by Patricia Haugaard. Awarded the 1989 Nobel Prize for Literature, Cela, now well on in his eighties, is yet as crafty and craftful as ever. Boxwood, which can perhaps best be described as a non-novel, has none of the structural signposts readers generally expect: there is no exposition, no crux, no denouement. Instead we have a mix of folklore, tradition, superstition, autobiographical snatches, cooking directions, a litany of nautical disasters on the coast of Deathships from afar with cargoes of oranges, typewriters, iron ore, oil, spiceselements of nature both cruel and beautiful, of man both saint and sinner, whales, witches, mermaids, ghosts, the exquisite, the crass all against the background of Cela's birthplace, Galicia. Camilo Jose Celahas published more than fifty books, including THE FAMILY OF PASCUAL DUARTE, HIVE, and MAZURKA FOR TWO DEAD MEN. As new, unread, first edition, first printing, in navy blue cloth boards, in as new, mylar-protected dust jacket.{Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} L122

A novel which "represents a culmination of the 1989 Nobel Prize winner Camilo Jose Cela's literary art. For both events, and for them only, the blind accordion player Gaudencio plays the same mazurka." Originally published in Spain in 1983 and translated by Patricia Haugaard. 312 pp.

Boxwood
by Cela, Camilo Jose
New York. 2002. New Directions. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0811214974. Translated from the Spanish by Patricia Haugaard. 211 pages. hardcover. Cover Illustration by Juan Pablo Rada. Jacket design by Semadar Megged. keywords: Literature Spain Translated. FROM THE PUBLISHER - BOXWOOD, which can perhaps best be described as a non-novel, has none of the structural signposts readers generally expect: there is no plot, no crux, no denouement. Instead we have a mix of folklore, tradition, superstition, autobiographical snatches, cooking directions, a litany of nautical disasters on the Coast of Death - ships from afar with cargoes of oranges, typewriters, iron ore, oil, spices - elements of nature both cruel and beautiful, of man both saint and sinner, whales, witches, mermaids, ghosts, the exquisite, the crass, all against the background of Cela's birthplace, Galicia. In one of the early exchanges between reader and author that occur randomly in the text the reader understandably asks: ‘Isn't this getting a little jumbled? ~' ‘Just a shade jumbled.' ‘Like life itself?' ‘Yes, though I try not to say so.' Reader bear with him. There's gold to mine! Camilo Jose Cela was born in Galicia in 1916 - his father, Spanish; his mother, English. He studied law, medicine, and philosophy in London and Madrid and in his younger years worked as a journalist and an actor. Cela published over fifty books - among them The Family of Pascual Duarte, HIVE, and MAZURKA FOR TWO DEAD MEN. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1989 and died in 2002. Patricia Haugaard lives in Ireland and has translated a number of books from the Spanish. She is very familiar with Galicia and its coastal area. ‘If there is any Spanish novelist who deserves the Nobel Prize on the merit of experimentation alone, it is without doubt Camilo Jose Cela.' - Miguel Ugarte, The Nation. inventory #32373 ISBN: 0811214974.

The Family of Pascual Duarte
by Cela, Camilo Jose
Boston: Little Brown, 1964. Book. As New. Cloth. First Edition. First Printing. Small octavo, brown cloth covered octavo with gilt spine titles. 166 pp. The first book by this Nobel Prize winning, Spanish author and politician. A Francoist supporter, he was also something of an existentialist in this novel whose anti-hero commits, crimes and murders making it reminiscent of Camu's The Stranger. The New York Times calls it "After Don Quixote, probably the most widely read novel in Spanish literature." This copy is in excellent collector's condition; very tight, with very fresh cloth and sparkling gilt titles. The interior is bright white and the volume as a whole is completely unmarked, unblemished and certainly unread. In a similar dust jacket; equally tight, crisp, glossy, sharp, unclipped and pristine. Very fine in very fine dust jacket. AS NEW. A flawless copy..

THE HIVE
by Cela, Camilo Jose
New York: Farrar, Straus, and Young, 1953. The first novel by an author ranked as one of Spain's best, a "Spanish Hemingway." It deals with characters in the beehive of Madrid, especially one cafe and the people who frequent it. The book has one slight dampstain at the top of the first few pages, slight shelfwear, and edges that are slightly soiled. A red dot appears on bottom edge but the book's age precedes the more modern practice of remainder marks. The jacket also precedes laminated ones and the plain paper is subject to wear, however it has always been protected by mylar, thus shows little wear, no price clipping, but a bit of tanning. Not usually seen in this condition.. First Edition. Cloth/boards HB. Near Fine/Very Good Plus.
