It represents the genesis of Carroll's later famous work, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This 1886 First edition captures the original charm and intimacy of the manuscript with Carroll's handwritten text and sketches, offering readers insight into the early development of one of literature's most beloved tales. Lewis Carroll hand-wrote, illustrated, and bound this copy himself and later gave it as a gift to Alice Liddell and her two sisters, Lorina and Edith. A rare find in any condition! With "An Easter Greeting." in type at the end.

Octavo, 4 volumes. "Through the Looking-Glass" is the stated "tenth thousand," but the other volumes are first printings. A handsome set, uniformly bound by Riviere and Son in full rich blue polished calf, with all edges gilt, tilt edges and borders, elaborate spine compartments, reddish-brown morocco spine labels, marbled andpapers, and the original cloth bound in at rear in all four volumes. A very near fine set, with the spines gently and evenly faded to lighter blue, but with gilt still vibrant. A few leaves trivially bumped at the bottom edge of "Through the Looking-Glass;" entirely forgiveable. A most pleasing set.

Original red cloth blocked and ruled gilt on upper and lower covers, lettered gilt on spine. All edges gilt. First issue with black coated endpapers. With illustrations in text by the author. The first and only edition of this facsimile of Lewis Carroll's original manuscript of the suppressed book that became Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This copy inscribed by the author on half-title "Helen Bagnall from the author, Dec 3/92". Tipped onto front endpaper is a press cutting from 1928 relating to the sale of Carroll's original manuscript and loosely laid in are press cuttings reporting on the death of the author (1898) and the discovery of some unpublished letters (1937). Cloth a little marked with some uneven fading of lower board, spine darkened, inner front hinge cracked at gutter, half-title somewhat browned by offsetting from the laid in press-cuttings. In all other respects a very good sound copy with clean, unmarked text.
