JOHN COHEN: THE SHAPE OF SURVIVAL
by Daiter, Stephen (Editor/Publisher); Cohen, John (Photographer); Smith, Patti & Matter, Herbert
Chicago, IL: Stephen Daiter Gallery, 2002. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Chicago, IL: Stephen Daiter Gallery, 2002. Softcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 34 pages. Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by David W. Williams: Regular-sized volume format. Plain white softcovers, as issued. Photographs by John Cohen. Text by Patti Smith and Herbert Matter. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In integral pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine and very large flaps, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago from September 13 through October 26, 2002, and in collaboration with Deborah Bell Photographs New York. Presents "John Cohen: The Shape of Survival". The photographer's "Peruvian Pilgrimage" photographs, taken between 1956 and 1957. For Cohen, they are living testaments, almost fifty years later, of the Peruvian people's resilience and grit amid the harsh terrain of the Peruvian landscape. Aside from being one of the most remarkable American photographers of our time, John Cohen is also a teacher, a world-class scholar of primitive art, and a Renaissance Man who has composed music and made films. Lest that make him sound overly cerebral, the exact opposite is true: His photographs are rife with life and natural beauty. Cohen's photographic oeuvre was finally collected in a book, "There Is No Eye" (2001) . This is, in effect, its companion volume, and the only body of work comparable to it is Robert Frank's. An absolute "must-have" title for John Cohen collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce copy thus. 27 duotone plates. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOHN COHEN TITLE IN OUR CATALOG).

de l'ame pour l'ame (of the soul for the soul)
by [Smith, Patti]
[New York]: n.p. [Gotham Book Mart?], 1973. First edition. Near fine.. Scarce original program from one of Smith's earliest gigs, predating her first album by almost two years. This, the first of three performances in honor of the anniversary of Arthur Rimbaud's death (also known as "Rock-N-Rimbaud"), took place on the roof of Le Jardin, a gay disco, in the Hotel Diplomat on November 4th, 1973. Smith sung and recited her own works, as well as songs by Kurt Weil and Hank Ballard. She was backed by Bill Elliot on piano and future Patti Smith Group member Lenny Kaye (both listed in program) on guitar. This would be only the second time Smith and Kaye performed together (the first being when the two opened for a Gerald Malanga reading at the Poetry Project almost two years earlier) and the first time Smith headlined a show with Kaye at her side. The program also thanks both Robert Mapplethorpe (just a few months after his first solo exhibition) and Sam Wagstaff, certainly one of their earliest links in print. A landmark event, one which sowed the seeds of not only of Smith's band and the burgeoning New York punk scene, but inspired by Smith's most important influence. 14'' x 8.5''. Single pale blue leaf, printed recto only. Xerographically reproduced. Line drawing of Rimbaud by Smith to top of sheet above text, which lists of the program of events, and a quote from Rimbaud (in part: "The Poet makes himself a seer by long, gigantic, and rational derangement of the senses..."). Also mentions "special appreciation to The Wartoke Concern, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dennis Florio, Sharon Ensko, Sam Wagstaff and Gotham Book Mart." Two faint shallow creases. Else bright, sharp, clean.

Mon Vieux Lucien (One of 50 Signed Copies)
by Patti Smith
New York: Gotham Book Mart, 1973. Broadside. Fine. An all-but-pristine copy of this early, original Patti Smith broadside, issued by New York's legendary Gotham Book Mart in 1973. #36 OF ONLY 50 NUMBERED COPIES SIGNED BY PATTI SMITH (within a larger limitation of 300 copies, the remaining 250 unsigned). A single sheet (printed on only one side), consisting of thick, light-blue rag paper, measuring 8 1/2" x 12". (Ironically, given the connection to The Gotham Book Mart, this was written just before, as legend has it, Patti's 1974 short stint working in the bowels of The Strand).

The Night
by SMITH, Patti and Tom Verlaine
London: Aloes Books, 1976. Softcover. Fine. First edition. Octavo. String-tied red printed wrappers. Fine. Twenty-two poems written alternately by Smith and Verlaine. This is copy number 13 of 22 hand-numbered copies with a Rimbaud piece Signed by Patti Smith bound in. The colophon indicates that there were 25 copies signed by both poets, but Verlaine signed none, and the handwritten limitation seems to indicate that there were 22 copies rather than either the 25 stated, or the 20 we've heard speculated. Rare.
