Perhaps the first and only issue of this fanzine, featuring articles on punk and new wave bands. Of note is an article by Lester Bangs on punk roots, taking a somewhat contemplative and philosophical look at punk and its trappings, arguing that perhaps punk was already dead. Another notable piece features Patti Smith discussing Robert Bresson. With articles on the Nuns, Richard, The Avengers, Crime, etc. Published by Edwin Craven (aka Edwin Heaven), the original manager for the San Francisco punk band the Nuns, this apparently short-lived fanzine presents well-written yet quirky interviews and essays on various punk and new wave acts. GOOD condition. Moderate browning to the paper. Moderate minor tears along the extremities, with some chipping and associated creasing. Center fold crease present. Minor soiling.

Printed on inexpensive newsprint type paper and measuring 11 1/4 x 16 1/2" tall. These four issues all contain extensions of Cantos of Ezra Pound by a wide variety of poets and artists including Corso, Buckminster Fuller, John Cage, James Lee Byars, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley and others. Also these issues includes writings, photographs, interviews and more with Charles Henri Ford, W. S. Burroughs, Ira Cohen, Patti Smith et al. Other than toning to the paperstock which is normal for these issues, they are in fine condition. Special lavender clothbound edition printed in silver provided directly by the publisher in presumably very small quantities. This copy comes with the original mailing envelope from the publisher SIGNED by Michael Andre in 1995 and sent to poet Jackson Mac Low.

This book is hard-bound in burgundy covers with a black leather spine, with light gray stamping to the upper cover and spine, with a pictorial paste-down on the upper cover. There is some very light rubbing to the edges of the spine-ends, as well as somne light wear to the very top and bottom of the joints, but with the covers in otherwise excellent condition. The binding is solid. The contents are bright and clean with 250, black & white photo illustrations throughout. This book is signed/inscribed by the author/artist Patti Smith on the title-page. Laid-in at the front of the book is a folded booklet/pamphlet titled, "Patti Smith, A Pythagorean Traveler. An Evening of Words and Song, January 11, 2007," which is signed by Patti Smith on the inside. Also included with the book is the padded, mailing envelope which was used to ship the book between the collector and the author/artist (The envelope is torn open, but added for provenance.) - From the collection of Cuthbert Christian Thambimuttu (1945-2019) of Columbus, Ohio - known to many of his bookseller, author, and illustrator friends as "Tubby." He was persistent in the pursuit of autographed books by the writers and artists he admired, including Gorey, Sendak, Heaney, Byatt, Morrison, Updike and many more. Joseph Heller once wrote to Tubby in response to one more "please sign and return" request: "This is turning out to be a hell of a lot of work!" Contains Patti's Hey Joe (Version) on the A Side and Piss Factory on the B Side of the record. Record is in clean very good condition. The sleeve is somewhat worn and toned, but in overall good to very good condition. The sleeve is boldly SIGNED by Patti on the front and also SIGNED by Lenny Kaye on the back panel of the sleeve. The record was produced by Lenny Kaye for Robert Mapplethorpe and was originally recorded on June 5, 1974 on Mer Records 601.

With a line drawing of the poet Rimbaud (by Patti Smith, although not attributed). Near Fine condition with faint crease. A program for an evening of poetry and music celebrating the anniversary of the death of poet Arthur Rimbaud. Includes a list of poems by Smith as well as one by Kurt Weil and one by Hank Ballard. Smith's name is not mentioned in this program, but she refers to this event in her memoir Just Kids as having taken place in 1973 in New York on the rooftop of Le Jardin in the Hotel Diplomat off Times Square. One of Patti's earliest performances.

[New York]: n.p. [Gotham Book Mart?], 1973. First edition. Near fine.. Scarce original program from one of Smith's earliest gigs, predating her first album by almost two years. This, the first of three performances in honor of the anniversary of Arthur Rimbaud's death (also known as "Rock-N-Rimbaud"), took place on the roof of Le Jardin, a gay disco, in the Hotel Diplomat on November 4th, 1973. Smith sung and recited her own works, as well as songs by Kurt Weil and Hank Ballard. She was backed by Bill Elliot on piano and future Patti Smith Group member Lenny Kaye (both listed in program) on guitar. This would be only the second time Smith and Kaye performed together (the first being when the two opened for a Gerald Malanga reading at the Poetry Project almost two years earlier) and the first time Smith headlined a show with Kaye at her side. The program also thanks both Robert Mapplethorpe (just a few months after his first solo exhibition) and Sam Wagstaff, certainly one of their earliest links in print. A landmark event, one which sowed the seeds of not only of Smith's band and the burgeoning New York punk scene, but inspired by Smith's most important influence. 14'' x 8.5''. Single pale blue leaf, printed recto only. Xerographically reproduced. Line drawing of Rimbaud by Smith to top of sheet above text, which lists of the program of events, and a quote from Rimbaud (in part: "The Poet makes himself a seer by long, gigantic, and rational derangement of the senses..."). Also mentions "special appreciation to The Wartoke Concern, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dennis Florio, Sharon Ensko, Sam Wagstaff and Gotham Book Mart." Two faint shallow creases. Else bright, sharp, clean.

Noted music photographer Donna Santisi is best known for her iconic images of pop and rock luminaries of the 1970s, including Iggy Pop, Janis Joplin, Debbie Harry, Prince, David Bowie, and Frank Zappa. Her seminal collection of punk rock photography, "Ask The Angels," was published by Double R Books in 1978, which was republished by Gingko Press in an expanded edition in 2010. A behind the scenes fixture of the downtown New York arts and music scenes beginning in the late 1960s, Friedman represented artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa, as well as managing Smith and John Cale (with whom Friedman founded Spy Records in 1977). Highlights include a HANDWRITTEN POSTCARD SIGNED by Patti to the fan (dated in 1977), a handwritten letter from Patti's mom who helped spearhead the early days of the fan club, several original candid photographs of Patti and more. A single sheet (printed on only one side), consisting of thick, light-blue rag paper, measuring 8 1/2" x 12". (Ironically, given the connection to The Gotham Book Mart, this was written just before, as legend has it, Patti's 1974 short stint working in the bowels of The Strand).

Amsterdam: Paradiso, 1978. Vintage single color silkscreen poster for a March 23, 1978 performance by The Patti Smith Group at Paradiso, Amsterdam. Designed by Martin Kaye. The opening act, Cake, was a Dutch reggae pop group, not to be confused with the 1990s alternative rock band from Sacramento, California. In 1978 The Patti Smith Group was touring in promotion of their third studio release, the highly acclaimed and commercially popular "Easter," which contained one of Smith's most recognizable songs, "Because the Night," co-written by Bruce Springsteen. Martin Kaye, one of the foremost poster designers of the punk era, was the Paradiso's longest serving in-house designer, from 1972 until 1983, with his studio in the basement of the venue. Kaye's silkscreen posters were usually produced in an edition of 125 copies which he would distribute throughout Amsterdam himself, accompanied by his dog Lady. 24 x 17 inches. Near Fine.

N.p.: N.p., 1978. Archive of 14 iconic vintage photographs of Studio 54 celebrities and revelers by photographer William Coupon, all from 1978. Ten of these are signed and dated by Coupon at the bottom right, and one bears a tag on the verso, noting, “Two Dancers, Studio 54, August, 1978.” Images of Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Grace Jones, Patti Smith, and Divine are included in the collection, along with a variety of other glamorous and fascinating visitors to the exclusive New York night club. Coupon’s Studio 54 photographs were included in the International Center of Photography exhibition "Fleeting Gestures: Treasures of Dance Photography" in late 1978, his first major exhibition. The photographs in this collection were exhibited at Photo London 2019 and on display at Tenderbooks in London in conjunction with Rare Photo Gallery in Toronto. Coupon was born in New York City, and after attending Syracuse University returned there in 1978. He began to photograph the disco/celebrity scene at Studio 54 and the punk/New Wave scene at the Mudd Clubb in lower Manhattan. During this time he also became a successful commercial photographer, working for a variety of international magazines, record companies, and advertising agencies. In the 1980s and 1990s Coupon did several series on various sub-cultures and indigenous peoples that he called “Social Studies.” In 1992 he was invited to photograph the world’s tribal leaders during Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The work, at the request of the United Nations and the United States Congress, was exhibited in 1994 in the United States Senate Rotunda as part of the UN’s "Year of the Indigenous People." Coupon’s vast catalog of portraits include world leaders, noted writers, artists, and musicians, as well as his highly regarded indigenous portraits. He has photographed covers for Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times Sunday Magazine as well as assignments for Esquire, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, People, and many more. He photographed 15 covers for Time magazine, including the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush “Person of the Year” covers and has photographed all of the Presidents of the United States from Richard Nixon going forward. 8 x 10 inches, archivally matted to 16 x 20 inches.
