THE ROYAL GAME AND OTHER STORIES (First UK edition - inscribed by the translator)
by Stefan Zweig (with an introduction by John Fowles)
First impression of the first edition in English. Translated from the German by Jill Sutcliffe, and inscribed by her on the title page. With a twelve-page introduction by John Fowles. ***Near fine in dark crimson cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean, with just a couple of small marks on the back board. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. No reading creases to the spine. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions, except for that of the translator who has provided a gift inscription on the title page (please see scans). No creases or tears. No foxing - pages clean. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £6.95 net. The dustwrapper is virtually flawless, with just some light rubbing to the edges and very light creasing to the tail of the spine. No significant chips, creases or tears. No fading even to the red titles on the spine. Dustwrapper bright. ***xviii prelim-pages including the introduction by John Fowles to the fore, plus 250 printed pages. 224mm x 144mm. ***Stories: The Royal Game; Amok; The Burning Secret; Fear; Letter from an Unknown Woman. ***'It is difficult to imagine, while reading the fives stories here newly translated by Jill Sutcliffe, how a writer of such formidable narrative gifts came to suffer literary obscurity. For his stories have a dark magnetism: he explores the limitless scope of every kind of singlemindedness - obsessional love, pathological revenge, even, as in the extraordinary title story, the madness in chess.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A near fine copy of the first UK edition of this translation - this copy being inscribed by the translator. A collector's copy, of interest to collector's of Zweig and Fowles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Emile Verhaeren, sa vie, son oeuvre
by ZWEIG (Stefan)
