Publisher: Concord: Edson C. Eastman, 1875. VG condition with 248 illustrated pages, the Large folding map of The White Mountains iby Cavis is present with several mis-folds and a few very short tears, (about Good+) & 7 pages of illustrated ads. A decent example of the Tenth edition. Dated 1872 on all points. After having the same copyright for app. 7 years (1864-1870) the publisher finally upgraded the Map and other info with this edition. The deliniations & text on the White Mountains map are bolder and areas more distinct than in the earlier Cavis maps. Several peaks, hotels, RR lines, etc. were added as well. This book and approximately 300 other White Mountain Guides (AMC, Eastman's, Sweetser's, Osgood's, Ticknor's, Chisholm's, etc.) are part of a very large collection we have just purchased & taken in from a long-time collector and local AMC & White Mountain historian here in NH. • Publisher: Edson C. Eastman, Concord, New Hampshire, U.S.A.
  • Date published: 1859
  • Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Concord: Edson C. Eastman, 1858. 179 pp. plus 14 pages of illustrated ads. Spine ends & corners worn a bit, FC hinge tender, contents are clean and unmarked, Map is about VG+ with 2 seal splits. Dated 1859 on both the title and copyright pages. Original dark brown pebble cloth with Titles in gilt and blindstamped rules. Folding original map 'Map of Routes' soundly affixed at preface page. An attractive example of the Second edition which is the most desireable due to the larger size and the fact that Eastman saw fit to start adding maps, this changed it from a tourist vaca trinket or keepsake to an actual useable guide with mountains and trails shown. Eastman's Guides outsold all other similar WM guides by a huge margin, due (I believe from reading several myself over the past 50 years) mostly to it's low price but also to it's brevity and interesting text that was engaging without being to technical. Eastman publisher kept the same name for over 50 years while another went through 4 name changes (Sweetser, Tichnor, Osgood, Houghton Mifflin Co.) in much less time (1880's-1921.) Nice Frameable map.
