A collection of verse in Scots (as popposed to an anthology of Scottish poems) starting with anonymous verse of the 1300s through to poets born in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Also includes a glossary of early Scots and modern Scots. Condition: A good solid copy, though the spine has a water-stain and is faded, and a few spots of fraying to the rear joint. The contents are very good.

Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor (1879-1964) was an American-born British politician and the first woman to sit in British parliament, serving as Unionist MP for Plymouth Sutton from 1919 t o 1945. From the year of publication – 1936 – onwards, Astor's reputation suffered "irretrievable damage" due to journalist Claud Cockburn's attacks on the 'Cliveden set' (ODNB). Adrian Bell's anthology, through which he "tried to catch some glint of the genius of the country in an oblique, perhaps the only way", opens with Thomas Hardy and juxtaposes Wordsworth and Thomas Bewick, Gertrude Jekyll and Mrs Gaskell, D.
