IMITATIONS (First UK edition - second impression)
Robert Lowell
Publisher: Faber &... Date published: 1966 Format: Hardcover

Second impression of the first UK edition, published in 1966. The first impression was published in 1962. With a title-page drawing by Frank Parker. ***Near fine in salmon-pink cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine on a dark-blue panel. Boards clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine not bumped. Corners sharp. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a very good typographical dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of 25s net. The dustwrapper is complete with just very slight loss at the head of the spine. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and browned. No chips or tears. Spine and back panel of dustwrapper [near the spine] slightly discoloured and browned. Lettering to spine of dustwrapper unfaded. ***222mm x 144mm. 149 pages. ***'Mr Lowell calls this unusual collection of poetry "a book of versions and free translations". His intention is not to make a literal rendering of a poem written in another language, but to try to create from the original a poem which is successful in English. At times there are wide departures from the originals, yet he usually stays quite close. Though they are "imitations", the imitator is unmistakably Robert Lowell.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Lowell followed "Life Studies" with "Imitations" (1961), a volume of loose translations of poems by classical and modern European poets, including Rilke, Montale, Baudelaire, Pasternak, and Rimbaud, for which he received the 1962 Bollingen Poetry Translation Prize. However, critical response to "Imitations" was mixed and sometimes hostile (as was the case with Vladimir Nabokov's public response to Lowell's Mandelstam translations). In a review of Lowell's "Collected Poems", the poet Michael Hofmann wrote that although he thought "Life Studies" was Lowell's best book, "Imitations" was Lowell's most "pivotal book," arguing that the book "marks the entry into his work of what one might term 'international style', something coolly open to not-quite-English." In the book's introduction, Lowell explained that his idiosyncratic translations should be thought of as "imitations" rather than strict translations since he took many liberties with the originals, trying to "do what [his] authors might have done if they were writing their poems now and in America."' (Wiki) ***Second impression of the first UK edition of "Imitations" by Robert Lowell, in very nice collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
