After Pearl Harbor, the United States had to frantically ramp up and deploy their air strike power; on April 28, 1942, the aircraft carrier Hornet, having een spotted by a Japanese fishing boast some 650 miles east of Japan, was forced to prematurely launch Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle and his sixteen B-52 bombers against the major Japanese cities. It was one of the biggest gambles and most harrowing missions of the war---no American force had ever bombed an enemy capital city before; it was uncertain if B-52s could even take off from an aircraft carrier; since the B-52s could not re-land on the carrier, they had to be flown to China for delivery to American units; the early launch forced 15 crews to bail out or ditch their aircraft--one crew landed in Russia.
