Pub by Lee & Shepard, Boston, 1869, often considered the 1st American Edition, probably erroneously. The true 1st American was published by Appleton, 1869, w/ same cover, same format as this, but valued at thousands of dollars more. This edition still very, very collectible. NOT exLib. VG+ or better condition hardcover now in archival grade Brodart, no dj. Purple bds w/ bright gilt framing & pict dec on front cover. Spine is sunned, w/ gilt lettering. All edges gilt. Solid brown eps. P/O's inscription hand-written in handsome old pen on 2nd blank page: "Merry Christmas Mamie, from Horace and Frankie, Dec 25th, 1869, " o/w book is clean & unmarked throughout. Hinges & textblock binding sound. 42 marvelous b&w illustrations by the incomparable John Tenniel. 192pp. Square, straight, tight, clean & unmarked except as noted, overall VG+ or better condition.
